Advent Lessons & Carols December 4

On Sunday, December 4 at 5 pm, St. Andrew’s will host a service of Advent Lessons & Carols. Framed in a liturgy that invites us to pause, reflect, and wait—counter to what our Christmas-crazed culture demands—this service will use readings to explore themes of expectation and the mystery of God’s incarnation as Emmanuel, “God with us.” Following the readings will be musical selections of either Advent carols sung by all or anthems sung by the St. Andrew’s choir that build on the themes of the readings. The use of candlelight, incense, and movement will punctuate this service. This service is adapted for Advent from the Christmas Eve Lessons & Carols service instituted at Truro Cathedral in Great Britain in 1880 and popularized by King’s College, Cambridge, which has sung the service annually since 1918.
