Work the Lot on White Linen Night August 5
The annual White Linen Night In the Heights will take place Saturday, August 5 and much of the fun will take place right on 19th Street. St. Andrew’s will once again provide parking for attendees to raise funds for the church and school. This is easy volunteer duty, simply bring a lawn chair and a cool beverage and donate an hour or two of your time. Volunteers are needed to staff the lot from 4-8 pm. This is a great way to raise funds for our ministries and get to know your fellow parishioners. If you would like to help, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 832-788-1443 or contact the church office at 713-861-5596.
Join Integrity Eucharist August 18
Integrity Houston will host Eucharist and a potluck dinner at 7 pm on Friday, August 18 at the Golding Chapel of Christ Church Cathedral. Bring friends and a dish and join together in the breaking of the bread. Together we can bring about the full inclusion of LGBTQIA folks within the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Texas and across the nation. For more information, contact SWayne Mathis at 832-630-0651 or email@example.com
Take the Hidden Crosses Photo Challenge
God is everywhere and so are crosses. They remind us that we never stray from God’s love. This summer, be aware of the symbol of the cross in hidden places. Snap a photo and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org before August 15 to be included in an online and in-house exhibit on August 20.
Get Ready for Rally Day!
Please plan to join us Sunday, August 20 for our annual Rally Day Ministry Fair. We will showcase our ministries along with the many ways you can be involved in growing the St. Andrew’s community.
This year, our ministry tables will be organized into the following categories, which align with our Visioning goals:
· Welcome and Embrace
· Following God into the Community
· Worship and Spiritual Growth
· Children and Youth
· Facilities Plan
Come upstairs to the Parish Hall after the 8:30 and 10:30 am services to see the many opportunities available to you at St. Andrew’s. A special surprise will be given to everyone who comes to the Rally Day Fair, so don’t miss the fun, fellowship and gifts!
Learn with Monthly Outreach Tours
Our next tour to Lord of the Streets (LOTS) is scheduled for August 24 at 11 am. We look forward to learning about the many opportunities LOTS has for the at-risk community. Everyone is invited to join us for outreach tours – usually scheduled mid-morning during the week. Look for more news on our tour schedule in the weekly emails and blue inserts in Sunday’s service bulletins. For further information, please contact Trish Mehrkam at email@example.com or call 713-861-5596.
Serve at Food Pantry August 26
Help us serve the hungry in our community on Saturday, August 26 as we volunteer at the Heights Interfaith Ministries Food Pantry, 3523 Beauchamp. We gather at 9:30 am and serve until noon. Volunteers help register clients, stock shelves, prepare bags of food and assist where needed. All ages and abilities are welcome—and there’s no need to sign up in advance. Just show up and lend a hand!
Blessing of the Backpacks August 27, 10:30 am and 2 pm. Bring your backpacks and your friends!
Daughters of the King meeting August 27
It is time to start preparing for the DOK Advent booklet. At Rally Day on August 20, we will provide instructions to help writers and artists with their booklet submissions. Perhaps in 2017, your thoughts or artwork will be part of our shared Advent journey. The booklet takes a team but is worth every minute as the parish enjoys a day-to-day journey to the birth of Christ.
Our meetings are the 4th Sunday of the month at 3:30 pm in St. Andrew’s House. This is your personal invitation to visit, and remember those that wear the silver cross are living into the oath of a Daughter of the King and are happy to answer your questions.
Sunday Morning Education
On August 6 classes for all ages will take a summer break. On August 13 we share Second Sunday Breakfast at 9:30 am in the Parish Hall. All are invited to Rally Day on August 20 and to join us as we kick off the fall program year on August 27.
Adult Ed - Faith Matters
On August 27, Carly Brown, Megan Gibbs and Carissa Baldwin-McGinnis begin a teaching series on the book Toxic Charity. As the congregation prepares to live more deeply into its vision and strategic plan, this resource may increase our competency for crossing lines of cultural difference while highlighting healthy ways to do outreach and community service.
Sunday Education Hour classes begin on August 27. If you have any question or suggestions, please contact Liz Luna at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Classes for children in PreK through 4th grade resume on August 27 when we kick off the year in our Godly Play and Creative Space classrooms. In Sunday school, children learn the stories of our faith and the importance of community. This year 5th graders are welcome to continue with Surrounded By the Story or move up to The Parlor youth community. Stop by the information table at Rally Day to learn more, or contact Lisa Puccio at email@example.com.
